The Nigerian Christian “dating system” does not work…

Why do so many Christian Nigerian girls get married so late on in their lives or not at all? Why do many hardly have any dating experience? Why do so many Nigerian girls who grew up in the UK have to go back to Nigeria to find suitors?

I think the above stem from four things:

1. The fact that Nigerian parents don’t allow their daughters to date for all of their teens and perhaps early twenties. Yet, expect them to be married by around the age of 26.

2. The fact that reputation sticks, and if you date within the Nigerian Christian community you are branded as “loose”. This actually just encourages people to date behind closed doors, whereas ‘British’ Christians are encouraged to openely date within the Church environment, which in my opinion, promotes healthy Christian relationships.

3. The HUGE double standard between boys and girls means that a lot of boys are allowed to date as many girls as they wish, which means they don’t settle down until a lot later on in life. This leaves their female counterparts stranded.

4. I don’t have a fourth point, and I am quickly losing interest in this subject. lol.

I just find it very strange. But maybe I am ill-placed to comment. I didn’t grow up around Nigerian Christians, I grew up in Wales. I am only commenting based on what I have observed in the Nigerian Christian conference I attend every 6 months or so.

So I probably have no idea. Meh. Goodnight :) xx
